How Horse Riding Supports a Child’s Development
Horse riding is much more than learning how to sit in the saddle. It is a journey of growth, responsibility, and connection.
When a child works with a horse, they quickly learn that communication is not only about words. Horses respond to body language, energy, and emotions. This teaches children to stay calm, focused, and aware of their feelings. If they are nervous, the horse senses it. If they are confident and gentle, the horse responds positively. This creates a powerful lesson in self-control and emotional awareness.
The bond that forms between a child and their horse is truly special. Riding the same horse regularly builds trust. Children learn to care for their horse — grooming, preparing, and thanking them after each ride. In return, the horse offers patience, loyalty, and honest feedback.
Horse riding also helps develop:
- Confidence and independence
- Responsibility and empathy
- Balance and coordination
- Patience and perseverance
- Respect for animals and nature
For many children, the stable becomes a safe space — a place where they can disconnect from screens, spend time outdoors, and feel proud of their progress.
The connection with a horse is unique and built on mutual trust. That trust often helps children grow into calmer, more confident, and more resilient young people.
At Finnsstaðir, we see this transformation every season — and it is one of the most beautiful parts of what we do. 🐴✨
Our Horses
We carefully select a suitable horse for each rider based on experience and confidence level.
Each child is assigned their own horse for the entire course. We believe that riding the same horse helps build trust, connection, and confidence — and this is one of the most appreciated parts of our program.
All our horses are well-trained, calm, and experienced with young riders.
